The 3270/5250 application assigns colors and any of the following visual attributes to the fields:

•Reverse video

•Underscore

•Blink

•Column separators

With ECS subroutines, you can detemine the foreground and background colors of characters within a field, but you cannot determine the visual attributes of those characters (see EcsReadColoredScreen in Part II).

3270 terminals and terminal emulators display colors based upon 3270 field attributes and extended attributes. Since most 3270 applications do not use extended attributes, only the four colors shown in the following table can be displayed.
